Low Sex Drive & Low Libido Counselling
Has Your Interest in Sex Changed?
Low sexual desire is one of the most common reasons individuals and couples seek sex therapy.
You may rarely think about sex anymore. Perhaps you still love your partner but don't feel sexual desire towards them. You might enjoy sex once it begins but almost never feel like initiating it.
Or perhaps sex has gradually disappeared from your relationship altogether.
At Intimacy Counselling NZ, we provide specialist sex therapy for individuals and couples experiencing low sexual desire, low libido and changes in sexual interest.
Why Has My Sex Drive Disappeared?
There isn't one single cause of low libido.
Sexual desire can be influenced by a combination of physical, psychological, relationship and lifestyle factors, including:
Stress and exhaustion
Relationship difficulties
Feeling emotionally disconnected
Parenting and young children
Menopause and hormonal changes
Pregnancy and postpartum changes
Medication
Anxiety or low mood
Body image
Painful sex
Sexual difficulties
Past sexual experiences
Pressure around sex
Repeated sexual rejection
Differences in sexual desire between partners
Sex becoming routine or predictable
Some medical conditions and medications can also affect sexual desire, so medical assessment may be appropriate when there has been a significant or unexplained change in libido.
I Love My Partner, So Why Don't I Want Sex?
Love and sexual desire aren't the same thing.
You can have a loving, committed relationship and still experience very little spontaneous desire.
For some people, desire doesn't necessarily appear before sexual activity. Interest may develop after affection, connection or pleasurable stimulation has already begun.
Sex therapy can help couples understand their individual patterns of desire rather than interpreting differences as rejection or lack of love.
Can Sex Therapy Help Low Libido?
Sex therapy can explore what is inhibiting desire and what helps create the conditions in which desire is more likely to emerge.
Therapy may include:
Understanding your individual desire pattern
Reducing sexual pressure
Rebuilding physical affection
Improving sexual communication
Exploring turn-ons and turn-offs
Understanding sexual initiation
Addressing resentment or relationship disconnection
Increasing novelty and eroticism
Developing intimacy without making every touch lead to sex
The goal isn't to force yourself to want sex.
It is to better understand your sexuality and develop a sex life that feels wanted, pleasurable and sustainable.
